I heard I might need a paper saying it's ok with my dh to travel over the border with the kids..is this true?

If you're taking the kids without your dh or he's taking the kids without you, then yes the parent taking the children across the border should have a document stating that it is okay with the absent parent that the kids are traveling across the border.
Even if they don't ask for it, it's always better to be prepared and have the document ready.
It is to help prevent cross-boarder parental abductions.

I have do get mine and my boys renewed and get one for my youngest.

About crossing the border, yes, each time I take my daughter across with me, I have my husband sign a letter (include his name and passport number and my name and passport number, and name(s) of the kid(s) and passport number). For my boys, I take along my full custody papers.

FYI: the past three times I've crossed, I've been asked for the letters, more often on the way back into Canada. Good to have them ready, just in case Smile
